But often, interested students aren’t very clear as to the meaning of being Greek and too often form their opinions driven by sensationalized news or social media.
What are the benefits of joining a fraternity or sorority? There are many benefits to joining a fraternity or sorority, but the top five can be broken down into:
1. Belonging to something bigger
3. Enhanced social skills
4. Building values
5. Encouraging achievement
Fraternities and sororities have strong bonds between their members, bonds built on their unique values such as brotherhood and sisterhood, mutual help, self-improvement, service to the community, and active citizenship. These values extend well beyond the member’s collegiate life and are values that benefit our communities as a whole.
Top 5 Benefits of Joining a Fraternity or Sorority
Below are the details of how joining Greek life can benefit you!
1. Belonging to Something Bigger
Great societies thrive when neighbors help their neighbors to accomplish something in common. According to the NIC and the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Research (CFSR), over $7 million is raised each year by Greeks nationally. Additionally, the Greek system is the largest network of volunteers in the US, with members donating over 10 million hours of volunteer service each year. A core value of all Greek organizations is striving to achieve and selflessly contribute to a greater good.
Greek organizations set expectations on their members to assure they are developing into a better version of themselves before they joined. These requirements vary in standard between groups but often are common in focus. Below are some of the various standards that Greek organizations expect of their members:
- Keeping good grades
- Practicing in fitness and sports whether for intramurals or just for fun
- Contributing to philanthropic efforts and community service
- Partaking in socials and mixers with other groups
- Leading events that can range from fundraising to brotherhood/sisterhood events.
These are just a small sample of related activities, but surely it can be concluded, Greeks are constantly trying to improve themselves and the world around them.
3. Enhanced Social Skills
Being social extends far beyond our friends and followers on our social media channels. Studies tell us that in spite of being overly connected through various channels, we are more disconnected from the deep social relationships than ever before. A recent survey of more than 2,000 Americans conducted by the Harris Poll in September 2016 on behalf of the American Osteopathic Association concluded that 72% of those interviewed answered that they experience loneliness at least once a week.
We are likely dedicating too much attention to our easy, virtual connections and forgetting to nurture deep relationships that are built over time and shared experiences. We are losing our ability to use our social skills beyond simple hellos and shallow encounters. However, instead of this unfortunate trend, our Greek organizations are evergreen in their abilities to build individuals that create and nurture meaningful social relationships. Brother and sisterhood are built on common values which include empathy, compassion, and understanding. All are aspects that make for fruitful relationships.

4. Building Values
Shared values are the backbone of any society. They form the basis for social norms, rules, and laws. Without common values, communities would cease to function. As a result, people would perform outside of the system of rule leading to chaos. As is the same within a fraternity and sorority. Values are the link that binds all members together under a common purpose and system. The alignment to values is particularly evident during the selection process of potential new members.
Greek organizations take pride in their letters and, as such, hold considerations to be included in their groups a rightfully high honor. However, as is too often within our greater society, without diligence and constant remembrance of one’s values, they can slip away, succumbing to entropy and decay, ultimately losing the ethos entirely. Many great civilizations have fallen by the wayside, particularly for this reason.
As such, Greek members are constantly reminding themselves in their daily actions, at chapter meetings, and particularly at rituals of their bond and commitment to upholding their values. These traits and unwavering attitudes toward them serve a benefit to our government, charities, businesses, and communities.
5. Encouraging Achievement
Winners aren’t those who never fail; rather they are people who never quit. Success in life is as much defined in accomplishment as it is in how we respond to inevitable failures. Although many students attend goal setting training, such as S.M.A.R.T. goals, very few apply these methods consistently enough to mold their behavior.
The focus on achievement is a common thread throughout all Greek organizations. They provide their members with the environment and training to learn continuously and to apply their knowledge. Whether the result is an accomplishment or a failure, they are learning how to achieve greatness and success in life after college, paying dividends to their lives and the lives of their communities.
The benefits above are just a shortlist of those shared by many Greek organizations. Perhaps, these strong values may have been what formed the life of many amazing people in history like the many U.S. Presidents, successful entrepreneurs, athletes and artists, and other civil contributors to form our great nation. Imagine if the next Martin Luther King Jr., Ronald Reagan, or Warren Buffet was in your chapter.
