A New Way of Looking at Fraternity and Sorority Recruitment
The fraternity and sorority recruitment season can be a stressful time for a potential new member and Greek chapters alike, but it doesn’t have to be. Ultimately, this struggle comes down to a harmful mindset where each side is only concerned about what the other side has to offer.
Instead, we need to understand that recruiting a PNM is a two-way street. Just like any other relationship that we want to build and maintain, we have to both give and take. We must build trust, and to do so, we have to be considerate and put our best foot forward.
Chapters: What Can You Offer a Potential New Member?
If your recruitment strategy is all about finding the “perfect” PNM and screening them to make sure that they’re everything you want in a person, then you’re probably doing it wrong. Of course, you want your PNMs to bring value to your Greek Chapter, but that shouldn’t be your first concern.
A better approach is outlining what you can offer PNMs, putting that message out there, and letting them decide to come to you. This creates a self-selecting population that wants to pledge because they see themselves aligning with your vision and values.
Tell PNMs what’s unique about your organization. Tell them what you hold dear and why brothers or sisters love being a part of the chapter. At the end of the day, this comes down to creating an effective system for promoting your chapter in the same way that a company promotes a brand.
Essentially, your letters are your brand. Why should a PNM pick yours over another’s? Give them a good reason to want to get involved, and then you’ll be able to sort out the wheat from the chaff from there.
PNMs: What Do You Bring to the Table?
PNMs, on the other hand, often focus on what the fraternity or sorority can do for them during the recruiting season. You probably want to know how the chapter will help you get involved in the community, what social events you can look forward to, and even how wearing the letters will improve your reputation on campus.
While it’s fine to look out for your own self-interest and only apply to chapters that align with your values, don’t forget to show your potential brothers or sisters what you bring to the table.
Are you a math whiz who can occasionally help a brother out with a tough problem? Are you great at organizing events so that you can take charge of running a gala or a fundraiser? Or maybe you even just have an infectiously positive attitude that all your sisters will appreciate?
Whatever it is that makes you unique and useful, be sure to highlight that when looking at Greek chapters. Besides making it more likely that you gain membership in the chapter of your choice, this will also help the recruiters decide whether or not you’re a good fit for their organization.
